Credit Report Errors: What Causes Them?

This type of blunder occurs when two people with the same name make the same mistake. For example, Bob Smith from Montana might have his credit information transferred to Bob Smith from Arizona. A debt may be reported as current by one credit reporting agency yet overdue by another.

• Delinquencies that have been documented for more than 7 years are considered chronic.

Derogatory credit information must generally be erased from your credit report seven years after the date of the first delinquency. A debt buyer or collection agency may re-age the date of last delinquent so that bad information on your credit record remains on your credit report for longer than seven years. The Federal Trade Commission fined NCO Financial Systems $1.5 million in 2004 for doing just this. It’s against the law.
